Between October and December 2013, I worked in Brussels (Belgium) as a studio archivist for the intermedia artist Charlemagne Palestine.

I do not yet have permission to publish his private database here, and it is not available through any other public website, but to share about my efforts there are snapshots below of the inventory listing that was created for the project, and some thumbnails of the records that were digitized!

To begin, I first seperated his archives into 3 collections: public, personal, and administrative.

During this time, I was mostly concerned with processing and digitizing as much as possible in regards to the public records—such as announcements, reviews, exhibition posters, and published texts.

Very little had been written at this point about Charlemagne Palestine's life work, and I contacted him with the proposal for a project that could help towards this goal.

My focus for this archiving project was thus based on an idea of making research available for a future researcher, who may later write a text that could finally publish a survey Charlemagne Palestine's incredible, largely undocumented, artworks across multiple media and countries.

I ran out of time before I could finish processing this segment of the collection, and due to logistics was unfortunately not able to return and complete the project.

But a few months later, I did have the experience of curating an exhibition of Charlemagne Palestine's installation art at ESS, during his week-long residency in Chicago. There is more about this, here!
